A Timeline Of Important Breakthroughs That Influenced Solar Power

With a wealth of history solar power technology isn’t as new a discovery as many would believe.

Solar power was actually discovered in the 1800’s by a nineteen year old French scientist by the name of Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel.

The discovery happened when Becquerel experimented with an electrolytic cell composed of two metal electrodes.

Becquerel went on to discover the photovoltaic (PV) effect, when he realised that certain materials when exposed to light would emit energy.

According to Becquerel, “the shining light on an electrode submerged in a conductive solution would create an electric current.”

Photovoltaic (PV) power did not come into it’s own until in 1941 when Russell Ohl invented the solar cell.
